Youth Athlete Coaching

Evidence-based performance coaching that helps young athletes move better, build strength with purpose and develop the physical qualities that transfer to sport.

WHY MOST YOUTH TRAINING MISSES THE MARK

Is Your Child Working Hard But Not Seeing Results?

Most young athletes are already training several times each week.

They’re putting in the effort, but many still struggle with things like:

  • Feeling slower than other athletes.
  • Lacking confidence in contact situations.
  • Repeated niggling injuries.
  • Plateauing despite training hard.

The reality is, simply playing more sport isn’t always enough.

To run faster, jump higher, be agile and become more resilient, young athletes need to develop the physical qualities that underpin athletic performance.

That’s where structured strength and performance coaching makes the difference.

Why Strength Training Matters

Done properly, strength training isn’t about building big muscles or turning kids into powerlifters. It’s about teaching young athletes how to move well, produce force efficiently and build the strength, power and resilience that transfers directly to sport.

Research consistently shows that age-appropriate, supervised strength training can:

  • Improve speed, power and change of direction.
  • Reduce the risk of sporting injuries.
  • Improve confidence and body awareness.
  • Build a strong foundation for long-term athletic development.

Every athlete I coach trains according to their age, experience and stage of development, with technique always coming before load.

Ways to train

Every athlete begins with an initial consultation where I get to understand their sport, current training load, movement quality and goals.

From there, their training evolves alongside them. As they grow, improve and their sporting demands change, so does their coaching.

Nothing is generic.

1. Youth Performance Program

More than just a training program.

Every athlete receives individualised coaching, including a personalised training plan, ongoing coaching, regular progressions, exercise feedback and direct support to ensure they’re continually improving—not simply following a spreadsheet.

One of my biggest goals isn’t just to make young athletes stronger—it’s to teach them how to train.

I want every athlete to understand what they’re doing, why they’re doing it, and how it helps them perform better in their sport.

By giving athletes the knowledge to understand their own training, they develop the confidence and decision-making skills to continue improving long after they leave the gym.

2. Small Group Training

The same coaching philosophy delivered in a supportive small-group environment.

Athletes still receive individual coaching and feedback while benefiting from the motivation, accountability and energy that comes from training alongside like-minded athletes.

Measuring Progress

One of the biggest advantages of working with AMP Coaching is that progress isn’t based on guesswork.

Throughout the year, athletes complete regular benchmark testing using industry-leading VALD performance technology, allowing me to objectively measure key physical qualities such as strength, power and movement performance.

Rather than simply assuming an athlete is improving, we can track meaningful changes over time, identify strengths and areas for improvement, and use that information to continually refine their coaching.

It also gives athletes and parents clear feedback on their progress, making improvements visible rather than relying solely on how training “feels.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Things parents ask

Is strength training actually safe for young athletes?

Absolutely.

When strength training for young athletes is properly supervised and matched to an persons age and stage of development, it is one of the safest and most effective ways to improve movement quality, athletic performance and reduce injury risk.

Not when it’s planned properly.

Every athlete’s training is built around their current sporting commitments, ensuring it complements what they’re already doing rather than adding unnecessary fatigue.

The goal is to help them perform better in their sport—not take away from it.

Not at all. Many of the athletes I coach have never stepped foot in a gym before.

The focus is always on learning movement, developing confidence and building strong foundations before progressing strength and performance over time.
